Prior to the pre-season, GM Brian Burke told anyone who would listen that the Leafs would be tougher to play against than ever before and backed it up by signing New York Rangers tough guy Colton Orr on the first day of free agency.
After the most promising pre-season campaign in over 20 years, the Toronto Maple Leafs opened the regular season on October 1st versus longtime division-rival Montreal Canadiens.
The excitement level was ratched up a couple of notches when it was announced that Brian Burke had acquired young sniper Phil Kessel from the Boston Bruins. Called by 2006 #1 draft pick Alex Ovechkin as the best player in the 2006 draft, the prospect of Kessel, currently recovering from off-season shoulder surgery, joining the Leafs lineup in November is enough to make any Leafs fan heart race with thoughts of the post-season.
After 4 years of missed playoffs, there is a sense of optimism surrounding the 09-10 Leafs squad. They will be tougher, they will be meaner, and they will be tighter defensively, all of which means that the Air Canada Centre will be a very difficult place for opposing teams to play. And that means that the ACC will be the place to be this hockey season!
